Illinois Mother Arrested After Poisoning Her Two Children

If any good news can be found in this disturbing story, it is that the children of 29-year-old Krystale El Khatib survived. That may not have been the case if Khatib’s 9-year-old son had not had the courage and intelligence to text his father that he, and his 4-year-old sister, needed help.

In an apparent suicide attempt in which she planned to take her children with her, Khatib crushed up several benzodiazepines including Valium and Xanax. She then put them into her children’s apple juice and forced them to drink the toxic juice. Finally, she took a handful of the prescription drugs herself and passed out. This is when her 9-year-old sent his dad the life-saving text.

The children were treated at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and tested positive for the drugs. They are now safe and living with their biological father.

Khatib confessed to police on videotape. She said, “I brought the children into this world and I can take them out of it.” She is being held at the Cook County Jail on a $1.5 million bond.
